Digital marketing is moving at a fast pace, and you surely don’t want to be left behind. From the very onset of the telephone to wireless transmission, moving to radio and billboard commercials, down to the internet to social media platforms, many businesses have always been on their toes waiting and trying to figure out the next big thing.  It’s a no-brainer that 70% of consumers and businesses today are based online; so if you’re a business owner in this technology age, a major part of your business should be digital by now. The scope of digital marketing is far broader than social media.

This means that as a business owner you must not stick to one working strategy; you must always be on the lookout for new marketing trends and how it can affect your business positively. Below are some of the marketing developments that will be taking this year in a big way.

1.    Smartphones are dominating the marketing industry

The desktop's reign is gradually fading away, and mobile devices are here to take up the market share when it comes to all-around usage (talking about advertising, conversion rates, and customer engagement). According to research by Statcounter, it shows that the mobile devices currently own 50.87 percent of market share. Meanwhile, desktop, on the other hand, has dropped to 91.51% usage rate in January of 2012 and now 44.87% as of October 2017.

As you can see mobile phones should be something every marketer's regardless of the industry should take seriously. With Google planning to shift to a mobile-first algorithm, mobile advertising is already something big.

2.    small businesses are adopting location-based advertising

Say you run a plumbing business: You can adopt a special offer ad that will show your business location when people make any search on plumbing in your area, this is a form of geo-targeting marketing that posts higher conversion rates and costs less. BIA Kelsey says the location-based mobile ad is expected to reach a market cap of $32.4 billion by 2021.

3.    Video will continue to dominate other ad media

A saying goes that “a picture is worth a thousand words,” if so what will a minute-long video worth, MILLIONS right? In other words, video marketing is the big thing in digital advertising; when it comes to garnering engagement and boosting conversions, gaining leads and traffic, video content has proven to be the most effective medium. According to a visual networking index by Cisco Systems, the video will account for 82 percent of all online traffic by 2021, so don't be left behind.

For all of the listed above reasons, focusing on creating a customer-relevant content your business will be a move that could turn out to make this year a good one for your business.
